Iran bars World Sufism Conference
TEHRAN, AUGUST 19

   

Iran has decided not to allow a world conference on Sufism that was to have been held in the southern city of Mahan to take place. Instead, the conference, in which hundreds of Muslims are expected to participate, will convene in October at San Jose State University, California.

The conference will center on the works of Shah Nematollah-Vali (1331-1431), known as the father of Sufism, who played an important role in bringing Iran to formally adopt Shiite Islam in 1502.

Initially, the conference was to be held in April, but following protests from clerics in Isfahan, who said Nematollah-Vali was a Sunni Muslim, it was delayed and then barred, one of the organizers said.

The tomb of Nematollah-Vali is an important pilgrimage site, and Iran's 500,000 or so Sufis continue to follow his teachings.

Sufis stick to traditional Muslim rituals, but also place importance on spiritual experiences through personal prayer and music.

Followers number several million worldwide, most of them from the Middle East, Asia and Africa.
